Whilst listening to a ‘Mind Fusion’ compilation, there was this track with vocals that sounded very much the same to a young Michael Jackson. First thoughts where, this might of been a Jackson 5 song that I’ve missed, but then the sound of the band wasn’t quite 70s Motown. There was more ‘Rock’ to their already present jazzy sound and more ‘freeness’ in the way they played. (Motown didn’t allow much or even any creative control with the Jackson’s, hence their move to CBS) Further on into the track an expressive, psychedelic guitar solo hit and I knew that this wasn’t the work of (Motown) the Jackson brothers.

I later learned that the track was called ‘Pick Your Feet off the Ground’ and the vocalist who I’d thought to be an adolescent Jackson, (or other guy at least!) was actually a young woman called Sarah Archer also known as Rush Winters. Sarah Archer and the instrumentalists where german group called ‘The Real Ax Band’ and the song that I’d heard was sadly from their only LP release  ’Nicht Stehenbleiben/Move Your Ass In Time’. And as for that unique, psychedelic, jazzy, rock sound they produced, it had a name. Krautrock. Which was a movement prominent in the late 60s to the 70s.

3rd mic!

As sick as the new Street Fighter is, the soundtrack I would say isn’t up to par as it predecessor. I mean the intro theme is abit iffy don’t you think?
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike on the other hand, had some serious beats. From the 90s boom-bap bonus stage beat to that zoned-out downtempo breakbeat baseline on Akuma’s Stage 3rd Strike has the best soundtrack in the whole series.
Acid Jazz, Hip Hop, Breakbeat and Drum & Bass aren’t musical genre’s you’d generally associate with a Japanese Arcade fighting game but it seriously worked for this one.

If you’ve played the game you should know what I’m talking about.
Have a listen for yourself…
here are 5 of my  favorite tracks from the game.

apologies for low quality, download the album for full

Let’s Get It On (Arcade Select)
I mean when has Character Select music been so deep?!, Almost all the time the CPU would have to auto-select for me cos I was too busy boppin’ my head to this beat.

Bonus Stage 2
This is serious business,boom-bap!! sounds like “Encore”… hmm

Moving On 3rd Strike Remix (Ending Credits)
Mellowed, Chilled out Hip Hop Track. Got that East coast 90s feel to it

Killing Moon (Akuma’s Stage)
Zonin

Snowland (Necro & Twelve’s Stage)
Probably my favorite

Canadian Hip Hop artist Infinite is the man behind the vocals on the Hip Hop beats

All these plus all the other beats
